The Daily is reporting that among his many cool projects currently in the works, Zac Posen is hard at work on a "lower priced line." The designer did a capsule collection for Target Australia last winter (damn those Aussies! They have the most gorgeous guys and Zac Posen for $49.99!), but this time around...

it sounds like he's working on a diffusion line to be sold through his own company, a la Marc by Marc Jacobs. "We've been in the process of building our lower priced collections," he told The Daily. "So we've been busy assembling our team for that starting with our fragrance." Color me ecstatic!

I also got this funny little tidbit from Posen yesterday afternoon when I attended a panel discussion, moderated by Tim Gunn, on "Redefining the Rules of Fashion in Today's Economy" presented by the YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund and sponsored by DOW XLA. The take-home message was pretty standard ("We will get through this! Creativity is more important than ever! Young designers are our future!") but Posen did make me giggle at least once. When Tim Gunn asked him how the relationship would change between designers and retailers in this crappy economic climate, Posen had a very informed and nuanced answer, detailing his desire to keep merchandise fresh, keep creating, blah blah blah...and then said that if you're retail strategy isn't working, it's time to reconsider. "Sell dresses door to door!" he said. "That could be exciting, right?" Oh Zac, if you rang my doorbell, I'd gladly interrupt dinnertime to buy a chiffon gown from you, I swear I would!

Men's fashion two piece pant suits have undergone considerable change over the past years.

Popularization of the Suit

In 1666, a decree was filed that mandated all men wear suits and wigs when appearing in the English court. From here, the suit popularized as a formal outfit. However, these suits were bright in color, ornately decorated and made of luxurious fabrics, much unlike the suit of today.

Even as late as the latter 1800s, the man's suit jacket worn with matching pants was considered plain and informal. Men's jackets were to be worn with odd-striped trousers to "liven" up the pairing.

Somewhere toward the early 20th century, the pairing of a man's suit jacket with matching pants became accepted for business.

Where Did the 3rd Piece Go?

Throughout history, a man's suit always included a vest. However, during World War II, there were cloth shortages. As all citizens had become used to doing, men gave up their vests for the good of the country. Vests had a short comeback after the war was over, however, men had begun to enjoy the freedom from this third garment, and vests quickly went out of style, again.

Men's Fashion Two Piece Pant Suits

There are a variety of styles of men's two piece pant suits. However, the main two styles are the double-breasted and the single-breasted suits.

Typically, a man's single-breasted suit has two to three buttons. The lapels have little to no overlap. The taller a man is, the more likely he able to elegantly wear a three-button jacket. However, many men today find it more reasonable to wear a jacket with only two buttons. Very tall men may choose a coat with four-buttons, because they have the height to carry off the extra emphasis at the front of the coat.

A double-breasted suit coat has two rows of buttons with lapels that overlap. These jackets usually have two or three pairs of buttons on them. Double-breasted jackets are said to be more conservative than their single-breasted counterparts are and always in style. However, overweight men do not tend to carry these jackets off as well as men with thinner builds.

Suit Etiquette

Buttoning of Jacket: Double-breasted jackets should always be buttoned. Single-breasted jackets may be left buttoned or un-buttoned, but the preferred is buttoned with one at the bottom left free. If a man has a jacket with functioning buttons at the cuffs, he may choose to leave one of these buttons open to demonstrate that he is wearing a bespoken suit.

Color: Conservative colors such as navy, gray, charcoal or brown are typically considered "the" choice for business wear.

Pattern: Solids are by far the most popular and accepted; however, pinstripes often have a look about them that makes them acceptable for business. Patterns with large shapes in them are not in fashion.

Ties: Typically, your tie should be darker than the color of your shirt. The colors within the tie should reflect the colors of the suit and the shirt. There are various knots from which to choose when tying your necktie, but the most popular is a variation of the Windsor.

Dress Shirt: Men should wear a long-sleeved shirt of woven fabric under their suit jacket. Iron and tuck the shirt into the trousers. Classic colors are white or light blue, but fashion of late has dictated that men have more color choices, including bolder, brighter hues such as red or lavender. The shirt collar should be pressed and look tidy underneath one's jacket.

Socks: Never wear white socks! Your socks should be the same color as your trousers, thus making them an extension of your leg.

Breast pocket: It's up to you whether you include a handkerchief that shows from the breast pocket. It's a little less common for men to wear this today, but still considered a look of class.

It's not that difficult to locate your very own men's fashion two piece pant suit. Many department stores carry a men's dress department. If you're looking to spend more on a suit, check into having a suit made for you by your local tailor.

These are the stunning pictures taken of the actress four-years-ago in her first fashion shoot by renowned Bollywood photographer Ryan Martis.

Did someone send a memo? Last year, everyone wore red. This year, it's a white wash. Taraji Henson, Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei and Penelope Cruz all went pale, with shades from ivory to white.

Hathaway's dress looked like porcelain sculpture, with layered pailettes creating a fish-scale effect. But the top seemed ill-fitting, and the lack of color made her ivory skin appear almost translucent.

I know many readers love to know what Angelina Jolie is wearing when she appears on the red carpet for different events. One question I’ve seen pop up is whether she was wearing the same shoes for the Golden Globes as the ones she wore earlier in the week for the Critics’ Choice Awards. It’s not a strange question since she has worn the same tan Christian Louboutin heels to many events, and we know that she’s been wearing those infamous love-them or hate-them nude flats into the ground.

However, it turns out that no, while they did look similar because of the similarity in color of her dress both nights, they were not the same shoes. For the Globes, Angelina Jolie wore silver Jimmy Choo heels.

For me, I thought the dress was gorgeous. Mostly though, I loved the silver color which I think goes nicely with her hair color and her beautiful eyes. I also absolutely love the long slit up one leg, really sexy without being over-the-top.

With so much competition on the red carpet an actress needs to stand out from the crowd, but some of Hollywood's finest stole the limelight for all the wrong reasons at last night's Oscars.

Fashion star Sarah Jessica Parker took up half the red carpet in her frothy over-the-top Dior gown. The pale green full-skirted dress was topped off with a rib-crackingly tight corset that showed off the Sex And The City star's tiny waist but failed to control her burgeoning decolletage.

Between breathing in and sorting out the billowing skirts the actress shouted above the crowds: 'It's barely mint', before rushing inside to manoeuvre herself into her seat.

The 44-year-old actress arrived hand-in-hand with husband Matthew Broderick, dispelling rumours of marital discord.

Other actresses flirted with the fishtail look. Beyonce added a touch of bling to the red carpet as she squeezed herself into a black and gold strapless dress by Armani Prive before changing into her stage outfit of top hat and tails for her performance with host Hugh Jackman.

According to our fashion guru Liz Jones, reporting live from the red carpet, the fishtails played havoc with clumsy men who kept tripping over the frothy fabric.

Another to go for the fairy princess theme was Penelope Cruz who arrived in a white vintage gown with silver embroidery, designed by Pierre Balmain. The sixty-year-old ruched chiffon dress had a touch of the bridal about it but was saved by her understated hair and make-up.

Despite her initial lack of interest in the field, Sonia - who is famous for her use of stripes and knitwear - has formed a lifelong success in her career as a fashion designer and takes a rather pragmatic view of her success.

When asked if she thinks there is such thing as 'intelligent fashion' she said: "All I can say is that it's what I try to do. It doesn't matter one damn bit whether fashion is art or not. Moss, 33, looked on from behind a pillar with her mother and a small group of friends as the first wave of customers ran into the store at 8 p.m.

Looking nervous, she quickly left just minutes later, leaving Topshop owner Philip Green to walk the store floor. "She is excited and nervous," he told PEOPLE. "Until it's out there, you just don't know, do you?"

The 50-piece collection officially launched across the UK on Tuesday morning when dedicated shoppers camped overnight for Topshop's 7 a.m. opening. The line will be available in Barneys in the U.S. beginning May 8.

Moss's rocker boyfriend Pete Doherty – who late last year inked a deal to design his own clothing line for the Gio-Goi label – was not at the event.

Toward the end of the Three Kingdoms period, T¡¯ang China introduced Koreans to silk mandarin robes and they were adopted for wear by royalty and officials. Noblewomen began to wear full-length skirt-trousers and wide-sleeved, hip-length jackets belted at the waist and noblemen began to wear roomy trousers bound in at the ankles and a narrow, tunic-style jacket cuffed at the wrists and belted at the waist.

In the late thirteenth century Koryo, the kingdom that ruled Korea from 918-1392, became a vassal state of Mongolia during the Mongol Chinese Yuan Dynasty. Its twenty-fifth ruler, Ch¡¯ungnyol-wang (r.1274-1308), took as his wife a princess from the court of Kubla Khan and began dressing in Mongol fashion. It is said that within three years of his ascendance to the throne, every official in the Koryo court had shaved his head except for a patch of hair in the middle and had adopted the dress of the Mongolian plains people. During the short time Koryo was a Mongol vassal, three kings were born to Korean-Mongolian queens, which had quite an effect on the social and fashion trends of the times. There are roughly 60 unique costumes attributed to the different areas in Poland, these are just a few.

Mountain Region
Traditional Costumes are still sometimes worn for Weddings and other important family and social events. The man's Gorale jacket from the Mountain region of Poland is made from the finest unbleached wool with distinctive hand needlework. The matching trousers are also decorated with exquisite needlework and feature a black stripe down each leg. Note the black felt hats with tiny conch shell bands. The traditional shoes worn with this outfit are moccasinlike with long laces that are wound tight over the trouser bottom. These beautiful jackets, and the ladies vests are often passed down through generations.

The ladies vest is embroidered with dyed silk and sometimes sequens, tiny beads, or pearls. The strings of red beads that are so common to ladies outfits were traditionally coral.

Men and boys wear the thawb, an ankle length piece of clothing which is long and fits loosely. Athough the thawb covers almost the entire body, it allows air to circulate freely. This piece of clothing was traditionally made of cotton, but it is also made of other kinds of cloth.

Women and girls in Saudi Arabia wear a long dress with long sleeves. It is called a jallabia (or sometimes a thawh).

Men also wear a ghutra an iqal on their heads. This is a square head cloth with a double circle of black rope or cord to hold it on the head.

Today Saudi men and boys wear this head cloth not only with the thawh, but also with work clothes. This headcloth comes in plain white and in red-and-white checks. It is folded diagonally to make a triangle.

Women and girls in Saudi Arabia wear a long dress with long sleeves. It is called a jallabia (or sometimes a thawh). It comes in different colors: black, green, purple, blue…and a lot more colors.

The dress is long so that it can cover every part of the body because our religion does not allow us to show any parts of our body. We have to cover everything.

Women in Saudi Arabia don’t wear these dresses every day now. They only wear them on special days or when they feel like wearing them, but the Bedouins, people who live in the desert in Saudi Arabia, still wear jallabias every single day.

The Korean Hanbok Fashion

Koreans use "bot"e as a general term for clothing. Traditional clothing and adornments, on the other hand, are called "hanbok"-an abbreviation of the term Han-guk pokshik (Korean attire).

Along with language, religion and cultural patterns such as dance, food, housing and aesthetics, apparel plays a vital role in the preservation and expression of cultural identity. In multiethnic nations such as China and America, styles of traditional attire are diverse.

However, in countries such as Korea, which are occupied by a single ethnic group, traditional dress is synonymous with national dress. For this reason, the hanbok forms a highly effective expression of Korea identity. Thus, changes in hanbok design from the past to the present parallel the nation's historical development. Moreover, hanbok's form, materials and designs provide a glimpse into the Korean lifestyle, while its colors indicate the values and world view of the Korean people.

Development of Hanbok

Hanbok is apparel of the Caftan type-a style of attire which is primarily found in Asia. During the Ko Choson era, Tan-gun popularized shaving of the head and the wearing of hats.

During the Three Kingdoms period, which began with the founding of Koguryo, hanbok consisted of a two-piece "unisex" outfit. The upper garments of this period opened in front and came down below the waist. They were held shut with a belt. The lower garments were also tied off above the feet. Notably, the opening flap of the upper garments seems to have been placed on a leftward diagonal from the upper right-in contrast with the left to right flaps on the chogori worn today. This change in the direction of the opening flap occurred after the mid-Koryo period. Among Western apparel, a right-side flap is used for male attire, while a left-side flap is used for female attire. Thus, the unisex style popular in the modern period can be said to have originated in East Asia, whereas the differentiation between male and female attire is thought to have originated in the West. Ancient Koreans produced upper and lower garments which were beautiful yet pracitically suited to the active lifestyle of nomadic hunters.

During the Shilla period, Korean society diversified while contacts with neighboring countries increased. At this time, Koreans began to introduce the international fashions of China's Tang Dynasty. Examples include sleeveless shirts for women, long scarves, decorative hairpins, male headdress and coats with roung lapels. Elaborate silk clothing and ornaments were other elements of the refined clothing fashions of the period.

During the KoryCo period, the long upper garments of the previous period gave way to waist-length attire. As a result, waist belts were replaced by coat tie-strings. As one of the unique features of Korean clothing, the coat string was initially a short, thin cord but eventually developed into the style seen today, i.e., a long, dangling piece of cloth that hangs down below the knees. Around this time, Tang Dynasty's fashions became less influential. As Korean society turned to the values of frugality and simplicity, the calm, tranquil beauty of agriculture life found expression in the period's famous blue celadon and white clothing. Korean clothing underwent further refinement as cotton was introduced into Korea from Yuan China. In addition, clothing regulations were introduced from abroad and a system of official uniforms was established for the palace.

The beginning of the Choson period saw the development of a Confucian society. At this time, the use of cotton became wide-spread. In addition, the period saw the development of a unique script, known as Han-gul, and the publication of numerous scholarly compilations. At the same time, there were diverse developments in the system of ritual attire. Confucianism, as the central ideology and faith of East Asia, was actively pursued at this time, along with its system of ritual dress. Ritual clothing represented the visible manifestation of intangible Confucian virtues such as benevolence, propriety, wisdom and trust. Since clothing served as a medium for the visible expression of a rite, it was deemed a very significant form of expression. Hence, Choson apparel, in addition to its role in delineating social status, represented a strict conformity to Confucian codes of ritual attire. In particular, a standardized system of clothing for the various rites of passages was established in accordance with numerous ritual manuals. Special attire was worn for the rites of manhood, marriage, mourning and memorial services. Even today, these clothes can be seen at weddings and funerals, and in particularly conservative areas, the special clothing for memorial services is still worn. The traditional dress of Confucian scholars can be seen in the paintings of the famous Choson folk painter, Shin Yun-bok. In these paintings, the outer robes are long, yet never touch the ground. Inside the robes, multiple layers of undergarments can be seen. With wide sleeves hanging down, the grave-looking scholar sports a broad-rimmed, horse-hair hat.

The late-Choson period saw great social changes as the common people came to resent the feudalistic system. The period was also marked by significant changes in values and aesthetics. At this time, female entertainers took the lead in the new developments in women's attire. Men's fashions, on the other hand, were primarily influenced by members of overseas missions, political reformers, overseas students and missionaries. Folk art depictions of women during this era show them wearing white belts, snug chogori that show the contour of the breast, and numerous undergarments exaggerating the volume of the dress. The erotic beauty of the garments has little precedent in traditional Confucian culture.

The opening of Korea to the West intensified the pace of change in apparel. Most notably, clothing during this period became much simpler. During the coup d'etat of 1884 and the Kabo Reform (1894), clothing specifications for various ceremonies were combined to form a single ritual attire. The awkward, wide sleeves became narrower and male top-knots were cut off. Among woman's attire, undergarments as well as concealing vestments such as the ssugaech'ima (shawl), chang-ot (hood) and noul (veil) gave way to a more practical, short coat.

The disappearance of traditional attire during the process of modernization has been explained in relationship to economic development. Nations which have industrialized and developed economically have given up their traditional clothing, as part of their everday dress, at a more rapid rate than economically backward nations. In Korea, the hanbok began to disappear as everyday dress in the 1960s and came to be used only during rituals. As for traditional ritual attire, only marriage and mourning clothing have survived. Traditional hanbok are now only seen on special traditional events such as folk festivals, shamanic kut, historical dramas or reenactments of palace rituals.

In short, the hanbok has undergone many changes but has generally consisted of elements still evident in hanbok today, i.e. pants, outer coat, skirt, and soon. Among the hanbok's different forms, ritual clothing has traditionally taken precedence. During its development, the hanbok acquired some elements from neighboring nations, while changing to suit the particular needs of the times.

THE TRADITIONAL UKRAINIAN DRESSES

Folk costume is a basic element of a country's culture and craft, closely tied with its whole history. Vasyl Boiko, a fellow at the Institute of Art, Folklore and Ethnography of the Academy of Arts and Science of Ukraine, writes that folk costume "distinguishes itself through its originality and the wealth of regional variations... The Ukrainian costume is a genuine encyclopedia of the people's creativity. In it are synthesized the folk arts of weaving, style, sewing, adornment (embroidery, applique, trimming, etc.)."

Traditional dress in Ukraine shows a high degree of sophistication, elegance, and artistry. For centuries scholars of ethnography (descriptive anthropology) and folklore have collected and studied Ukrainian folk costumes. Art historians have paid much attention to the highly artistic embroidery that is a fundamental element of folk costume.

History

The earliest-known dress worn in the territory of Ukraine dates back to the Scythian and Sarmatian tribes. Men wore cloth or fur trousers, jackets, pointed caps, and boots. Women wore wide shirts that dropped to the knees, a coat with armhole slits, and a cap like a man's hat but covered with a wrap. Embroidery was a Scythian art as far back as the 5th century BCE, according to archaeological finds.

But it was during the Kyivan-Rus era, according to Kateryna Mateiko, a scholar with the Ukrainian State Museum of Ethnography and Crafts in Lviv, that the prototypes of the basic elements of the Ukrainian costume developed. The main elements of dress were the shirt, trousers, cloak, sheepskin vest, overcoat, cap, footcloths, stockings, and boots. Princes and boyars (the upper ruling class) wore clothes influenced by Byzantine fabrics and ornaments.

During the Kozak period, the nobility dressed in Renaissance styles prevalent in Europe, with the addition of long overcoats and sheepskin jackets to protect against the climate. Kozak officers adapted this dress to military needs, with short caftan or zhupan, wide trousers or sharovary, and cloak or kyreia. Townspeople imitated the fashions of the nobility to some extent, while the Kozak style influenced the dress of the peasants. The features of dress that evolved during the Kozak period among the townspeople and peasants were preserved with some changes, while the nobility adopted European baroque fashions.

The golden age of Ukrainian folk costume was the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century when regional variations reached their peak. Availability of factory-made fabrics in the second half of the 19th century changed the fabric used in the fashions, but the general features of folk dress persisted in small towns and villages until the First World War. After the First World War, folk dress began to disappear in the countryside because of the low price of urban clothing and the peasant's desire to dress like townsfolk.

How many variations of Ukrainian costume are there?

Scholars of Ukrainian folk costume usually classify it by regional differences. The Encyclopedia of Ukraine recognizes five regional groups: that of the Middle Dnieper Region, originating in the Hetman period; Polisia; Podilia; central Galicia and Volhynia; and the Carpathian Mountains and Subcarpathia, including Pokutia, Bukovyna, Hutsul, Boiko, and Lemko.

The book Ukrainian Folk Costume divides the country into 17 ethnographic regions: Dnipro, Kyiv, Poltava, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Podilia, Northern Bukovyna, Polissia, Volyn, Hutsul, Boiko, Zakarpattia, Lemko, Yavoriv, Sokal, Pidliashia, and Kholm.

Classifying costumes by region is a broad tool, since variations occur from village to village. Costume differs according to sex, with woman's dress more elaborate than men's. Social, economic, and marital status influence dress and there are special ways of dressing according to the season and for festive occasions.

Design and Calibration of Boat Wake Model 2009

Project Description:
As coastal development continues, boat wakes are being introduced both in greater frequency and magnitude and into areas that would otherwise rarely experience wind-generated wave energy. Our intention is to complete development of a tool, which we are calling the Boat Wake Energy Model (BoMo), to forecast wave energy distribution arising from such wakes in order to then understand the impact or assess damage of natural resources and plan mitigative strategies. BoMo will be a sophisticated boat wake generator and wake propagator model that computes wave energy, wave height and wave period generated by the small boats and ships in a geographic format. The wave energy is a function of boat hull length, hull shape, beam, displacement, boat velocity and bathymetry. Wave energy will be computed for both planing and displacement hulls and over complex bathymetry and shoreline geometry. BoMo will be divided into two main modules, a wake generator module to generate the boat wake and wave propagator module to propagate the wake generated to the shoreline. Because these entries interface with the bathymetry and shoreline in a Geographic Information System (GIS), the user also will have an option to select the path along which boat is sailing. The wake generator module provides output as a georeferenced map of wave height, wave period and wave heading. The wave propagation module includes the shareware REFDIF1, a nonlinear, combined refraction/diffraction model. Values of wave height and wave energy will be provided as outputs at the grid nodes in form of a text file, and various georeferenced map products.

Expected Outcome:
Adapt the University of Delaware REFDIF1 (refraction-diffraction) model to accept boat wake input in a GIS format. Produce a series of hull type x speed x water depth = wave height calibration curves. Develop, test and add a neural network component to input wave characteristics to REFDIF (or its equivalent) based on vessel type, speed and size. Integrate these computations into a GUI targeting the skill levels of resource managers. Nominate this product for a technology transfer award.

Two cultures meet in Lasem Indonesian batik

Many frequently associate batik, the hand-dyed textile unique to the archipelago, with Surakarta, Yogyakarta and Pekalongan. While the first two cities are famous for their standard motifs, like flaming gringsing, princely parangrusak and bridal sidomukti, Pekalongan's batik designs are not set, so are as free as that coastal culture.

Another unique batik tradition can be found in the Central Java town of Lasem. Although both are coastal areas of the province, Pekalongan and Lasem have different batik motifs, owing to the two communities' dissimilar creative efforts and cultural influences.

Pekalongan batik are made by indigenous Javanese of Arab descent who produce floral designs, whereas Lasem batik are created by Javanese yet reflect a strong Chinese influence in their phoenix, dragon, bamboo and fan patterns, typical of Chinese paintings.

The Chinese reportedly settled in Lasem over 200 years ago. An uncorroborated account even says Lasem was named after the number 63 (lak sam in a southern Chinese dialect) -- part of the fleet of legendary Admiral Cheng Ho from the Zu Di empire of the Ming dynasty.

The tale goes that, as the fleet sailed along the Java Sea in 1413, great storms washed 63 of its junks ashore in Lasem -- hence the town's name.

The Chinese entry to Lasem has also hit the big screen in Ca Bau Kan, a novel by Remy Silado, who also wrote Sam Po Kong, describing Cheng Ho's voyage as far as Semarang, the present-day Central Java capital.

History records that the ethnic Chinese population grew fast along Java's northern coast from Jakarta to East Java, including Lasem.

Located 13 kilometers east of Rembang town, the district town of Lasem is the capital of Rembang regency. Serving as a transit terminal for inter-provincial buses plying Java's northern routes, Lasem has become more famous than Rembang.

The route brings fresh air to the town's handmade batik business, which experienced its golden period in the 1970s.

""There were around 100 batik entrepreneurs in Lasem. Its batik shot to fame back then,"" said Purnomo, 56, a batik maker who specializes in stamped horse motifs.

Lasem's handmade batik centers are found in subdistricts such as Gedongmulyo, Babagan, Karangsuri, Sumbergirang and Karanggede.

Purnomo employs 30 workers in his cottage industry in Gedungmulyo, Lasem. The area has many mansions with tall walls, heavy dragon-relief doors and ash-bowl altars for ancestral worship, resembling a Chinatown.

It is in these large residences that hand-printed batik production formerly enjoyed its heyday with its typically Chinese themes. Today, though, ""Only around 10 batik houses continue to survive. The handmade batik industry has been in sharp decline since the 1997 economic crisis"", said Purnomo.

Since the rise of machine-printed batik in 1994, handmade batik have been sidelined even further. Far lower in price, the modern products are generally preferred by today's consumers, who mostly seek cheap goods.

""We, as part of the community of batik craftspeople, have lodged protests, but market interest is more decisive. Machine-printed batik maintain their good public reception,"" he acknowledged.

In addition, some people assume that handmade batiks are an ancient and sacred craft, which leaves an impression of the textiles as expensive luxury goods. In actuality, the handmade products are not too expensive either at Rp 100,000 (US$11) for kain panjang (a wrap), though other types can fetch Rp 1 million ($110) or more.

At Lasem Market, a typical handcrafted batik can be bought at only Rp 75,000, while a refined and intricately designed one cloth may cost Rp 1 million -- the latter are often bought by fashion boutiques and major shops.

The artistic value of handmade batiks lies in their motifs and refined texture, and Lasem has five main motifs: tiga negeri, empat negeri, kawung, rawan and kendara-kendiri.

The complicated process of making batik by hand demands higher costs and a longer time compared with machine-made batik. For example, 20 craftspeople can make 100 batik cloths in two months -- or five pieces each.

Some of the phases in the traditional batik-making process are drawing the pattern, resist-dye waxing and dyeing. The latter step itself may involve three stages, and the more colors that are used, the more stages it requires.

The production costs for handmade batik is about Rp 15,000 per piece, in addition to two daily meals for the craftspeople.

Purnomo claimed that before the influx of modern batik to the market, he was overwhelmed by buyers' demand. Today, he only sells about 20 pieces a month.

The Rembang administration has strived to promote Lasem's handmade batiks through participation in business and trade fairs, but the market has not indicated much interest.

Lasem batik was among the work exhibited at a Semarang mall in March, featuring the original hand-printed batik from Pekalongan, Semarang, Kebumen, Puworejo, Demak, Kudus, Pati and Jepara.

""Lasem batik always boast typical Chinese colors, earth red and dark red, which are unique. Batik lovers are well aware of this distinctive feature,"" said Nita Kenzo, the owner of several Semarang boutiques that sell traditional batik.

In Nita's observation, Lasem still lacked the regeneration of its batik makers. She hoped that handmade batik exhibits presenting diverse regional products would raise interest among youths and help boost the spirit of restoring batik craftspeople to relevant areas. Further developments have led to divergent views among batik lovers over the use of natural or synthetic dyes.

For Purnomo, chemical dyes pose no problem.

""Formerly natural materials were used because no chemical colors had been found. In my opinion, chemicals produce better and lasting colors. Soap is now used in laundering instead of the klerak fruit, and after washing the batik, the textile can be dried in the sun without affecting the colors,"" he said.

With regard to handmade silk batik, Purnomo said he liked the material, ""but in this tropical climate, cotton batik is more suitable. Silk batik only suits air-conditioned rooms"".

He spoke sparsely on the lack of training a new generation of batik craftsmen while retaining his elderly workers.

""Young people now prefer jobs other than making batik,"" he said.

Lasem's traditional batik entrepreneurs should perhaps heed the efforts of the Semarang government, which has organized handmade batik courses that attract about 25 participants per class, mostly comprising students, youths and young housewives.

Hijab Chic : How retailers are marketing to fashion-conscious Muslim women?

"Full coverage," not your typical fashion show prerequisite, was the theme at a "fashion seminar" recently hosted by Nordstrom at the tony Tysons Corner Center mall in McLean, Va. The show, called "Interpreting Hot Trends for Veiled and Conservative Women," was perhaps the first high-fashion hijab event sponsored by corporate America. The target: well-heeled Muslim women living in the suburbs of Northern Virginia, where mansions and mosques are filled with rich Muslim immigrants, an increasing number of whom shop at Tysons Corner.

The Nordstrom show is part of a growing trend: Western retailers and designers are beginning to market directly to Muslim women. In 2000, for instance, European designers Yves Saint-Laurent and Jean-Paul Gaultier showed at the International Festival of African Fashion in Niger while ultraconservative Muslims paraded through the streets in protest of the "satanic" presentation. A 2004 Hermes ad featured two women with the dark hair, dark eyes, and olive skin of many Middle Easterners and wearing the company's iconic scarves wrapped around their heads in the Muslim style of hijab. (When asked, the Hermes advertising department would say only that its marketing pitch is "global.") And a little over a week ago, French designer Judith Duriez, co-owner of the Dubai-based company Arabesque, debuted her fall 2005 collection of "sheilas" (veils) and "abayas" (gowns) for the cloaked Muslim woman. These fashions, traditional long black gowns (the color is one rule Duriez refuses to break), are enhanced by non-traditional accents such as mother-of-pearl trimmings and chiffon ribbons.

Retailers have likely caught on to the fact that conservative Muslim women are as interested in fashion as any other women and that, as a population numbering at least 500 million—an estimated half of which cover up regularly—they constitute a large, and potentially lucrative, untapped market. Indeed, to anyone who's paying attention, it's evident that Muslim women are going to great lengths (and in some cases spending a substantial amount of money) in an attempt to reconcile their religious mandate to dress modestly with their desire to look fashionable. Many women interpret the idea of "hijab"—the term comes from the Arabic word "hajaba," which is translated as "to cover," and is used generally to refer to modesty, and more specifically, to mean headscarves and formless gowns—quite liberally. They wear Diane Von Furstenberg mini-dresses over Levi jeans or rapper-style do-rags as headscarves. Other women don scarves by designers such as Christian Dior, Hermes, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana. And even the traditional dress is no longer black and shapeless but comes in various cuts, colors, patterns, and textures: slim-cut, baggy, silk, chiffon, fringed, fur-cuffed, hand-painted, and even embroidered with rhinestones and feathers.

The trend would be just another marketing gimmick, except that the hijab is not merely an article of clothing, but a politically charged symbol. The hijab, as most people know by now, has become emblematic of an ideological and political movement that promotes a puritanical interpretation of Islamic law, or Sharia. In this interpretation, it is "haram," or illegal, for a women to reveal her arms, legs, or any bodily curves. In the most conservative circles, revealing the face, ankles, neckline, and hands is also verboten. (The Quran, while calling for modesty, does not mandate that women wear hair scarves or long gowns.)

To attend the fashion seminar, I had to go undercover in more ways than one. Nordstrom's publicity department called the show a "private event" that was closed to the press. When I asked why, I was told the company hadn't "media trained" its sales representatives. What if, God forbid, a Nordstrom saleswoman pitched a gauzy scarf that left a woman's hair visible? I'm a Muslim woman, but I don't cover my hair except when I go into mosques with a hoodie over my head in a look I call "ghetto hijab." So, at the diner across the street, I draped a hot pink scarf from the Tie Rack over my head and covered my body in a flower-patterned Nine West trench coat—more Grace Kelly than hijabi Muslim, but it worked—and prepared to see what Nordstrom thought was in fashion for the veiled-and-shrouded set.

The morning of the event, about 100 women—their hair covered by scarves, their bodies cloaked in abayas or burqas, and at least two of them with their faces fully veiled—pulled into the Tysons Corner parking lot in Volvos, BMWs, and Lexus sedans. In liberal Muslim circles, these women are sometimes derisively called "hijabis." The chicest among them—those who wear silk Hermes scarves and long Barneys jackets—are dubbed "fashionable fundies" (as in "fundamentalists"). The women call themselves "muhajabah," or "women of hijab."

The women and I slid into chairs set up at the top of the store's escalators, a few feet away from a display of slinky Nicole Miller gowns. The Nordstrom sales team was composed mostly of non-Muslim Americans, but there was one Muslim saleswoman with a scarf pulled up high over a bun in her hair. A chipper Nordstrom saleswoman in an appropriately modest business suit opened the show by pointing to a row of mannequins outfitted in what she called "the latest fall trends." There was a full-length Eileen Fisher skirt: "It allows for full coverage," she emphasized. And a black Anne Klein jacket: "It closes up high," the sales lady stressed. Finally, a $425 green-and-black Tesori tweed coat: "Just perfect for your unique style." In other words, it would cover the contour of a woman's butt—another no-no to reveal. The Nordstrom Web site promotes the jacket as a "tailored fit," but that wasn't part of the sales pitch here.

But something was obviously missing. A saleswoman stepped forward: "Of course, we have scarves!" Of course! Each mannequin had a scarf wrapped around its neck, ready to be pulled up. There were also brooches, which were said to be "perfect for pinning up scarves." A Muslim woman in the audience snickered at the effect of one broach atop a headscarf; it looked like a cake decoration.

Of course, the most puritanical Muslims would say that hijab is not meant to be flashy. According to these men and women, it's supposed to be the sartorial equivalent of a burlap sack, not a trimly tailored Anne Klein jacket. It's supposed to be black, not trendy colors like fuchsia and teal. Preachers from New Jersey to California rail at the pulpit against women who put too much fashion in their hijab. To quote one rant on a conservative Muslim Web site: "Everyday we see our Muslim sisters proudly displaying names and initials on their clothing. … What are they advertising? CD, YSL, D&G,"—as in Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent and Dolce & Gabbana—"How ironic that the most modest of dressing—the cloak and scarf—should become contaminated by advertising the names of some of the most shameless and perverted people in the world."

But women will no doubt continue to thwart such dictates in a desire to look stylish while remaining pious. And it may be Muslims themselves, versed in the nuances and requirements of the hijab, who will be best equipped to introduce it to the world of high fashion. Next month, on Nov. 10, Femmes Arabes, a magazine for Arab women, will sponsor a fashion show in Montreal featuring caftans—long flowing garments popular among Muslim women in North Africa—designed by five Canadian designers and five Arab designers; it held a similar show last year. And Eve N Black, a Dubai-based boutique founded by Muslim fashion designer Mohammad Bahrami, sells abayas that cost anywhere from $1,500 to $10,000 and are often displayed with matching shoes and purses. (If she spends $6,500 or more, a woman can get a copyright for her personal abaya design.)

If the Nordstrom event made one thing clear, it was that it's not easy to combine high fashion with religion. While one woman walked away with a long orange duster sweater, women on both sides of the figurative catwalk were grumbling unhappily. A Moroccan woman found a black polka-dotted top inappropriate because of its "three-quarter-length sleeves." Sleeves, according to the strictest standards of hijab, must extend to the wrists. A George Mason University law school student groused that a black Anne Klein skirt was "too short" because it hit the calves. A young scarved woman became frustrated that she wasn't able to find "an A-line skirt without a slit." And the Nordstrom cashiers mumbled to each other they weren't ringing up enough sales. Indeed, the fashion seminar, to borrow a phrase from the fashion world, was a definite miss.

Amongst the contestants are professional and amateur designers from Egypt, Turkey, European and the CIS countries. The best collections will be shown at Muslim Fashion Week in Moscow.

Punks or ravers they certainly are not. Discrete and devout, their kind of fashion statement could not be further from the razor-sharp mohawks or day-glo accessories of those counter-culture types. But young Muslim entrepreneurs around the world are making their own fashion statements, modestly, challenging the status quo in their communities as well as stereotypes outside.

In an ever-influential global pop culture that idolizes the shortest of skirts and catwalks where flesh can overshadow fabric, Muslims from Sydney to Saudi Arabia who love fashion are taking matters into their own hands.

"When I first took up the hijab seven years ago it was a struggle to find any fashionable clothing. Dressing up was an ordeal to the point where I'd have to mix and match parts and pieces of clothing from several stores, just to come out with a single outfit," said Sarah Binhejaila, a Saudi who started the made-to-order brand Niyaah a year ago when she moved back to the Middle East after studying fashion abroad.

Instead of a two-layer system in which a uniform outer garment covers Western clothes, Binhejaila and other designers like her are creating alternate looks in a single layer that she calls "complete wear."

"Historically, Islamic clothing for women across the Arabian Peninsula was always rich in design, color and embroidery. But this rich history of Islamic tribal fashion was threatened to become extinct due to the enforcement of the black abaya," the long over-garment and matching head scarf, she said. "I'm attempting to revive that festive spirit by using the richness and appeal of modern fashion within the boundaries permissible by Islamic dress code."

The British designer Sophia Kara made just such a statement in Leicester, England, last year when she showed her line, Imaan Collections. One model wore a hooded abaya with a matching niqab, or face veil, in shocking pink over a salwar, or loose pants, printed with an ornate English floral motif.

Specialty fashion houses and companies starting distinct ranges intended for fashion-conscious women who observe hijab, which means either covering one's head or, more broadly, dressing modestly, is part of a much wider trend. Filling a market gap for products that either comply with Shariah law or that are simply more attractive to Muslim values is a niche that is attracting increasing numbers of manufacturers and retailers. Toys like the Fulla doll, a modest Barbie of sorts, and comic books with Islamic superheroes like "The 99" are as much a part of this sector as the traditional domains of Islamic finance and halal, or permissible, food.

"The hunt for the Islamic dollar at the retail end of the value chain is now starting to heat up. But it has a very long way to go until it is anywhere close to being fully realized," says Abdalhamid Evans, senior analyst at Imarat Consultants, a Malaysian marketing company that specializes in the global halal sector. "You can just about squeeze clothing into the broad concept of the halal market, in that clothing is an offering to the same consumer base as halal consumers - the same people who eat halal food and use Islamic financial services."

Kamarul Aznam, the Malaysian-based managing editor of the bimonthly Halal Journal, tracks everything from halal fashion to pharmaceuticals around the world and knows well the inherent difficulties in trying to quantify this market. "There is no such thing as an official statistic or trade data for the global Muslim fashion industry but there are guesstimates, which we use regularly," he says.

Assuming that 50 percent of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims dress modestly and that, conservatively, they spend $120 a year on such clothing, Aznam estimates that the global market is worth at least $96 billion a year.

"And as for non-Islamic countries such as the U.K. or France, since they have a higher purchasing power parity and clothes have a higher price tag, I would imagine it to be higher, spending up to $600 a year," he said. "Assuming the U.K. alone, which is home to around 1.5 million Muslims, the figure could be in the region of $90 million to $450 million a year."

At that rate, the 16 million Muslims in the European Union could create a clothing market worth $960 million to $4.8 billion a year.

Ausma Khan, chief editor for Muslim Girl, a young women's lifestyle magazine that was started last year in the United States, believes that dedicated brands would have added appeal for many Muslim consumers. "The potential to design for Muslim women and girls and to market to this audience is enormous," Khan said. "Imagine the clothes you see in most contemporary and popular fashion outlets - Muslim girls and women are buying them and then creatively filling in the gaps. But they would absolutely buy the same clothes with higher necklines, longer hemlines, a more voluminous fit and so on," she said.

Hip-hop fashion is a distinctive style of dress originating with African-American, Caribbean-American and Latino youth in The 5 Boroughs (New York City), and later influenced by the hip-hop scenes of Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, East Bay (San Francisco Bay Area), Detroit, and The Dirty South among others. Each city contributed various elements to its overall style seen worldwide today. Hip hop fashion complements the expressions and attitudes of hip hop culture in general. Hip hop fashion has changed significantly during its history, and today it is a prominent part of popular fashion as a whole across the world and for all ethnicities.

Early 1980s to Mid-1980s

In the early 1980s, established sportswear and fashion brands, such as Le Coq Sportif, Kangol, Adidas and Nike Inc attached themselves to the emerging hip hop scene.

During the 1980s, hip-hop icons wore clothing items such as brightly colored name-brand tracksuits, sheepskin and leather bomber jackets,^[1] Clarks shoes^[1], Dr. Martens boots and sneakers (usually Adidas-brand shelltoes and often with "phat" or oversized shoelaces). Popular haircuts ranged from the early-1980s Jheri curl to the late-1980s hi-top fade popularized by Will Smith (The Fresh Prince) and Christopher "Kid" Reid of Kid 'n Play, among others.

Popular accessories included large eyeglasses (Cazals^[2] or Gazelles^[1]), Kangol bucket hats,^[1] nameplates,^[1] name belts,^[1] and multiple rings. Heavy gold jewelry was also popular in the 1980s; heavy jewelry in general would become an enduring element of hip hop fashion.^[3] In general, men's jewelry focused on heavy gold chains and women's jewelry on large gold earrings.^[3] Performers such as Kurtis Blow and Big Daddy Kane helped popularize gold necklaces and other such jewelry, and female rappers such as Roxanne Shanté and the group Salt-N-Pepa helped popularize oversized gold door-knocker earrings. The heavy jewelry was suggestive of prestige and wealth, and some have connected the style to Africanism.^[4]

1980s hip hop fashion is remembered as one of the most important elements of old school hip hop, and it is often celebrated in nostalgic hip hop songs such as Ahmad's 1994 single "Back in the Day", and Missy Elliott's 2002 single "Back in the Day".

Late 1980s to early 1990s fashion

Black nationalism was increasingly influential in rap during the late 1980s, and fashions and hairstyles reflected traditional African influences.^[3] Blousy pants were popular among dance-oriented rappers like MC Hammer.^[3] Fezzes,^[3] kufis decorated with the Kemetic ankh,^[3] Kente cloth hats,^[3] Africa chains, dreadlocks, and red, black, and green clothing became popular as well, promoted by artists such as Queen Latifah, KRS-One, Public Enemy, and X-Clan). In the early 1990s, pop rappers such as The Fresh Prince, Kid 'n Play, and Left Eye of TLC popularized baseball caps and bright, often neon-colored, clothing. Kris Kross also established the fad of wearing clothes backwards.^[3] Kwamé sparked the brief trend of polka-dot clothing as well, while others continued wearing their mid-80's attire.

The Nike capture of soon to be superstar basketball protege Michael Jordan from rivals Adidas in 1984 proved to be a huge turning point, as Nike dominated the urban streetwear sneaker market in the late 80's and early 90's. Other clothing brands such as Champion, Carhartt and Timberland were very closely associated with the scene, particularly on the East coast with hip hop acts such as Wu-Tang Clan and Gangstarr sporting the look.

Gangsta rap pioneers N.W.A. popularized an early form of gangsta style in the late 1980s, consisting of Dickies pants, plaid shirts and jackets, Chuck Taylors sneakers, and black Raiders baseball caps and Raiders Starter jackets. Starter jackets, in addition, were also a popular trend in their own right during the late 1980s and early 90s. They became something of a status-symbol, with incidents of robberies of the jackets reported in the media.

Hip hop fashion in this period also influenced high fashion designs. In the late 1980s, Isaac Mizrahi, inspired by his elevator operator who wore a heavy gold chain, showed a collection deeply influenced by hip hop fashion.^[5] Models wore black catsuits, "gold chains, big gold nameplate-inspired belts, and black bomber jackets with fur-trimmed hoods."^[5] Womenswear Daily called the look "homeboy chic."^[5] In the early 1990s, Chanel showed hip-hop-inspired fashion in several shows. In one, models wore black leather jackets and piles of gold chains.^[5] In another, they wore long black dresses, accessorized with heavy, padlocked silver chains.^[5] (These silver chains were remarkably similar to the metal chain-link and padlock worn by Treach of Naughty by Nature, who said he did so in solidarity with "all the brothers who are locked down."^[5]) The hip hop trend, however, did not last; designers quickly moved on to new influences.^[5]

Mid-1990s to late 1990s fashion

Gangsta style

Gangsta rap became one of the most prevalent styles of hip hop, and by the mid-1990s, hip hop fashion had taken on significant influence from the dress styles of street thugs and prison inmates. The style of sagging one's pants is also a style that originated in poor, urban communities where clothes had to be passed down from older, bigger siblings to younger, smaller family members.

Fashion among "hip-hop" elites

On the West Coast, members of the hip hop community looked back to the gangsters of the 1930s and 1940s for inspiration.^[6] Mafioso influences, especially and primarily inspired by the 1983 remake version of Scarface, became popular in hip hop. Many rappers set aside gang-inspired clothing in favor of classic gangster fashions such as bowler hats,^[6] double-breasted suits,^[6] silk shirts,^[6] and alligator-skin shoes ("gators"). In some areas of the mid-west, including Detroit, this style has been a staple in hip-hop fashion, regardless of current trends.^{[citation needed]}

Sportswear

Tommy Hilfiger was one of the most prominent brand in 1990s sportswear, though Polo Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Nautica, and DKNY were also popular.^[7] When Snoop Doggy Dogg wore a Hilfiger sweatshirt during an appearance on Saturday Night Live, it sold out of New York City stores the next day.^[7] Hilfiger's popularity was due to its perceived waspiness, which made it seem exclusive and aspirational.^[7] Moreover, Hilfiger courted the new hip hop market: black models featured prominently in the company's advertising campaigns, and rappers like Puffy and Coolio walked during its runways shows.^[7]

Other brands, such as FUBU, Ecko Unlimited, Mecca USA, Lugz, Rocawear, harputs by Gus Harput, Boss Jeans by IG Design, and Enyce, arose to capitalize on the market for urban streetwear.^[7] They followed in Hilfiger's footsteps by manufacturing all-American styles emblazoned with huge logos.^[7]

Throwback jerseys

One sportswear trend that emerged was the rise in popularity of throwback jerseys, such as those produced by Mitchell & Ness. Sports jerseys have always been popular in hip-hop fashion, as evidenced by Will Smith's early 90's video "Summertime", and Spike Lee wearing a throwback Brooklyn Dodgers jersey in the film "Do the Right Thing". But in the late 90's saw the rise in popularity of very expensive throwbacks, often costing hundreds of dollars. Hip-hop artists donning the pricey jerseys in music videos led to increased demand, and led to the rise of counterfeiters flooding the market with fake jerseys to capitalize on the craze. The mid-to-late 2000s saw a decrease in popularity of throwbacks, with some hip-hop artists even shunning the raiments, such as Jay-Z, who rapped "And I don't wear jerseys, I'm 30-plus, Give me a crisp pair of jeans, Button up."

The rise of hip-pop

The rise of hip-pop in the late-1990s, primarily the work of Sean "Diddy" Combs, known locally around New York at that time as the "Shiny Suit Man" brought elements such as loud, flashy PVC aviator inspired suits and platinum jewelry to the forefront of hip hop in an effort to add a new vivid dimension of color and flash to the videos produced as a marketing tool. Combs, who started his own Sean John clothing line, and clothing manufacturers such as Karl Kani and FUBU brought hip hop fashion to the mainstream, resulting in a multi-million dollar hip hop fashion industry. There was a resurgence of traditional African-American hairstyles such as cornrows and Afros, as well as the Caesar low-cut. Caesars and cornrows are maintained by wearing a du-rag over the head during periods of sleeping and home activity to prevent the hair from being displaced or tossled. Du-rags soon became popular hip hop fashion items in their own right.

The "hip-pop" era also saw the split between male and female hip hop fashion, which had previously been more or less similar. Women in hip hop had emulated the male tough-guy fashions such as baggy jeans, "Loc" sunglasses, tough looks and heavy workboots; many, such as Da Brat, accomplished this with little more than some lip gloss and a bit of make-up to make the industrial work pants and work boots feminine. The female performers who completely turned the tide such as Lil Kim and Foxy Brown popularized glamourous, high-fashion feminine hip hop styles, such as Kimora Lee Simmons fashion line of Baby Phat. While Lauryn Hill and Eve popularized more conservative styles that still maintained both a distinctly feminine and distinctly hip hop feel.

In the mid- to late 1990s, platinum replaced gold as the metal of choice in hip hop fashion.^[3] Artists and fans alike wore platinum (or silver) jewelry, often embedded with diamonds. Jay-Z, Juvenile, and The Hot Boys were largely responsible for this trend.^[3] Platinum fronts also became popular; Cash Money Records executive/rapper Brian "Baby" Williams infamously has an entire mouthful of permanent platinum teeth. Others have fashioned grills, removable metal jewelled teeth coverings. With the advent of the Jewellery culture, the turn of the century established luxury brands made inroads into the hip hop market, with brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton making appearances in hip hop videos and films.

Modern Hip Hop Fashion

In the 1990s and beyond, many hip hop artists and executives started their own fashion labels and clothing lines.^[8] Notable examples include Wu-Tang Clan (Wu-Wear), Russell Simmons (Phat Farm), Kimora Lee Simmons (Baby Phat), Diddy (Sean John),TI (AKOO), Apple Bottom Jeans (Nelly), Damon Dash and Jay-Z (Rocawear), 50 Cent (G-Unit Clothing), Eminem (Shady Limited), 2Pac (Makaveli) and OutKast (OutKast Clothing). Other prominent hip hop fashion companies have included Karl Kani and FUBU, Eckō, Dickies, Girbaud, Enyce, Famous Stars and Straps, Bape, LRG, Timberland Boots, and Akademiks.

Today, Hip hop clothing is produced by popular and successful designers, who charge significant amounts for their products. Hip hop fashion is worn by a significant percentage of young people around the world, with a significant number of retailers that are dedicated to the sale of hip hop inspired fashions. Several web sites are dedicated to hard to find hip hop sneakers and apparel.

Recent trends

Due to the recent trend in hip hop fashion to revert back to the "old school" gaining popularity, the clothing is becoming similar to early 80's form of dressing. It has geared toward a more Hipster-inspired style of dressing with a nod towards irony, and may include items such as slim-fit denim jeans, tighter-fitting "vintage style" t-shirts with shorter arm sleeves, polo shirts, sportcoats, woven button shirts, large ornamental belt buckles, cufflinks, skull and skeleton decorations, elaborately decorated zip-up hoodies, trucker hats, lumberjack button-ups or plaid designed shirts, keffiyehs, and snow inspired fashions. Shorter length t-shirts have become involved in recent trends, in order to expose decorated belts and belt buckles and biker chains. Although the "baggy" style of dress remains relevant, some hip hoppers forego that particular style, opting for colorful fitted and hipster-inspired clothing as exemplified by the growing influence of rappers such as Kanye West, Common, will.i.am, and Andre 3000, as well as the tighter-fitting skater influenced styles in the case of Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco. Other re-emergent 80s trends include Members Only jackets, huge oversized chains, and large eyeglasses. Leather jackets also have seen a rise in popularity.

Criticism of hip hop fashion

Commentators from both inside and outside of the hip-hop community have criticized the cost of many of the accouterments of hip hop fashion. Chuck D of Public Enemy summarized the mentality of Hip hop fashion and some low-income youths as "Man, I work at McDonald's, but in order for me to feel good about myself I got to get a gold chain or I got to get a fly car in order to impress a sister or whatever."^[9] In his 1992 song "Us", Ice Cube rapped that "Us [African-Americans] will always sing the blues / 'cause all we care about is hairstyles and tennis shoes."^[10] Some fans have expressed disappointment with the increased amount of advertising for expensive hip-hop brands in hip-hop magazines.^[11] In one letter to the editor in Source magazine, a reader wrote that the magazine should "try showing some less expensive brands so heads will know they don't have to hustle, steal, or rob and blast shots for flyness."^[12] In fact, there were many highly-publicized robberies of hip-hop artists by the late 1990s.^[11] Guru of Gang Starr was robbed at gunpoint of his Rolex watch, Queen Latifah's car was car-jacked, and Prodigy was robbed at gunpoint of $300,000 in jewelry.^[11]

A few hip hop insiders, such as the members of Public Enemy, have made the deliberate choice not to don expensive jewelry as a statement against materialism.^[11]

Skin tone:
If your complexion is fair, gold with a blend of copper would look wonderful. If you are medium/ wheatish colored, go in for mixed shades of white, beige and bronzy golden. Dark skin toned should wrap up themselves with goldenish copper shades.

Comfort level and personal attitude
Your comfort level becomes an equally important determinant in deciding your style. If you do not feel very comfortable wearing western outfits but at the same time want to maintain a smart cosmopolitan look, Indo western style would add on charm to your personality. If you are shy introvert types, then you can carry yourself better in a sari with boat necked or square necked blouses. If you are bold and outspoken type, you can choose to pick up sleeveless, deep-necked blouses or may be with straps.

The Fashion Bomb Intern Contest

Happy Monday!
So today is a big day: it's day one of the Fashion Bomb intern contest! We received over 50 submissions from fashionistas all over the continent--from Florida to New York, Cali to Chicago and even Canada!
As soon as candidates e-mailed their interest, we put them to work to scour their local town for Real Style. Read on for the 411 on our finalists, and also tell us: do they have what it takes?
Our first Fashion Bomb Intern contestant is Vuitton Bain:

A University student in Canada, Vuitton is a native Bahamian and fashion fanatic! He says, "To me, fashion is more than just the label. You have to understand colors, textures, the design aesthetic of designers, the poetry involved in creating that garment. I'd like to believe that I have an innate sense of style, and when it comes to fashion, I know I'd get the job done perfectly." I think so too! For his Real Style, he snapped a picture of a fly young lady, "wearing a feathered tube dress paired with a vintage belt and pink FCUK pumps..."

Our next finalist is Suzy from Orlando, Florida:
A fashion student, Suzy says, "I believe that style comes from within no matter where you are..." With a tight deadline, Suzy decided to submit Real Style from her church service:

She says, "I decided to get some real guy style since I'm sure you'll get lots of pictures of fabulous ladies!" Good thinking!

...a senior at The University of Southern Mississippi, she says, "I have two major missions in life 1) to bring awareness to the unique style found in the southern states, and 2) promote awareness of the beauty in being brown within the fashion industry." For her Real Style, she kept it local, snapping a few pics with friends:
